CHENNAI: It was one of busiest days at the Central Organ Registry the nodal agency working from the Government General Hospital to network hospitals for cadaver organ transplants. It had received calls from three hospitals with offers from relatives of brain dead patients volunteering to donate organs.
A 66-year-old woman, who was admitted to the Apollo Speciality Hospital on January 24 was declared brain dead early on Tuesday.

The family had signed the form of consent for donating her heart, liver, kidneys and eyes. The registry called up hospitals to get a list of waitlisted patients. At the time of filing this report, it was decided that the heart would go to Frontier Lifeline, the liver and kidneys were to be used by Apollo Hospital and the eyes would be taken to Shankara Nethralaya.
