NEW DELHI: Transplant coordinators are the unsung champions of the world of organ donation. Most stories about organ donations are about the surgeons and green corridors, but few mention the person who made it all possible, the transplant coordinator who did the difficult job of approaching a grieving family and convinced them to donate the organs that gave a fresh lease of life to many.“Our young trained transplant coordinators are ‘the changemakers’ as they are the ones who work on the ground with families, police and doctors to make a difference.
Sometimes one donation can go on for 3 to 4 days and many don’t go home and are with the families not only till their very end but often going with the body and visiting them afterwards.
