INDORE: Transplant experts on Saturday gave a call for including brain death as one of the definitions of ‘death’ in the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, claiming that it will solve various legal hassles doctors face in their practice.The Act defines ‘death’ as “means the permanent disappearance of all evidence of life at any time after live-birth has taken place’.

Experts claim that the condition of brain death is irreversible and patient can’t be revived, despite the fact that some organs might function.“We want clarification in the act and include brain death in it. It will solve a lot of legal hassles,” said Dr Sunil Shroff, managing trustee of MOHAN Foundation, an NGO that works in the field of deceased organ donation.“If a patient is declared brain dead and the relatives say no to organ donation, then we have a problem,” he told TOI adding, “you can’t take out the ventilator.
