The Modi government has made changes to the regulations for organ transplants, allowing individuals aged 65 or above to register for receiving organs from deceased donors. The Union Health Ministry also recommended that all states eliminate the domicile criterion to enable patients in need to register for organs in any state. Additionally, the Ministry has advised states not to charge a fee for registration, as it is not allowed under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Rules, 2014. Some states, including Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Kerala, have been found to charge between Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000, according to sources.
