CHENNAI: Eight-year-old Nanjil Valavan lying in the intensive care unit of the Government General Hospital here, declared brain dead by doctors, died on Friday. The boy had sustained injures on Monday, reasons for which were not very clear.
After the doctors declared Nanjil brain dead, his mother Geetha began pleading with the central organ registry to harvest his organs.

But the registry refused to give the nod due to legal complications. However, after his death, Nanjil’s family tried to donate his eyes, but even that offer was turned down.Geetha’s desire to have her son’s organs harvested threw up a few complications. Geetha is separated from her husband who initially “refused” to sign the consent form that is mandatory before organs are harvested. “We normally don’t turn down organ donations. But we could not harvest the boy’s organs because the child’s father did not turn up to sign the consent form.
