MUMBAI: Love transcends tragedy. A doctor couple from Amravati whose three-month-old baby is brain-dead following a road accident, has urged the state to relax the norms of cadaver donation to allow them to gift her organs. While guidelines in the country are still ambiguous on whether babies aged less than a year can be certified as brain dead, the Savarkars are determined to see their beloved daughter Meera live on, albeit through her donated organs.

On Thursday, a national search had begun to find a match for the infant’s organs as the state registry didn’t seem to have an ideal pediatric match. On the insistence of the parents—Dr Umesh Savarkar, a gynaecologist, and his wife Dr Ashwini, a pathologist—the Nagpur-based Central India’s Children Hospital and Research Institute (CICHRI) began the process of certifying the brain death early in the day.
